“To see Townsend headline Bloodstock with a newly assembled band, after just one warm-up show.”
Context
On August 13, 2021, Devin Townsend steps up as Friday headliner at Bloodstock with a newly assembled band. Pandemic complications cut the preparation short. Stephen Platt, James Leach and Darby Todd have just one warm-up show with him, played the night before in Manchester.
On the Catton Park stage, the fan vote brings the extremes of his catalog together. Aftermath opens the Strapping Young Lad assault; Kingdom and Supercrush widen the melodic scale. Ziltoid challenges Townsend on guitar, demons carry horns in Bad Devil and an elephant stays on for Detox. The absurd takes shape among the musicians.
In December, the recording reaches the internet through the festival itself and preserves this meeting of short preparation and theatrical ambition. Platt, Leach and Todd keep backing Townsend in 2022. Here, the lineup is still in its first days: it carries a set chosen from the outside in, while the frontman turns the pressure into spectacle.
- Ziltoid takes on a guitar duel before the demons of Bad Devil arrive.
