Context
On May 27, 2012, Mastodon arrives at Megaland with a recent change of direction. After the long constructions of Crack the Skye, The Hunter had bet on shorter, self-contained songs. At Pinkpop, that choice takes the stage: eleven of the fourteen tracks come from the fifth album.
Black Tongue opens the way, and Crystal Skull makes the first link to the past. Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher share guitars, Troy Sanders handles bass and vocals, and Brann Dailor doubles on drums and vocals. Dry Bone Valley, Stargasm and Curl of the Burl carry the set, while Blood and Thunder comes before the closing Creature Lives.
The story moves on to Once More 'Round the Sun, released in 2014, but this festival appearance stays tied to The Hunter cycle. In August 2025, the recording takes on new weight: Pinkpop releases the full show as a tribute to Hinds, who died days earlier in a motorcycle accident. The archive now also holds a farewell.
- Creature Lives closes the performance, right after Blood and Thunder.
