Context
On October 15, 1994, it is two days before the first anniversary of Criss Oliva's death. At The Mirage, in Minneapolis, Savatage carries on with Alex Skolnick on guitar. Handful of Rain had already hit the stores, and the road brings together a lineup rebuilt around that absence.
Zak Stevens takes lead vocals, while Jon Oliva handles keyboards and rhythm guitar. Johnny Lee Middleton and newcomer Jeff Plate complete the quintet. Taunting Cobras opens a sequence that makes room for seven tracks from the new album. Edge of Thorns, Sirens and The Dungeons Are Calling keep the past on stage.
Skolnick's time in the band is short: the tour crosses the United States and moves on to Japan, where it gets another document, Japan Live '94, released in 1995. Minneapolis remains in the circuit of recordings traded among collectors. The record preserves a concrete transition: Savatage presents new material without dropping the songs built with Criss.
- Jeff Plate takes the drums on the tour that marks Jon Oliva's official return.
