Context
On May 26, 1996, The Gathering reaches Landgraaf a day after playing Dynamo Open Air. Mandylion had put the band on the Dutch charts for the first time. Now Pinkpop welcomes the lineup with Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals, in the first cycle of shows after her recording debut.
Eléanor opens a nine-song sequence that leans mostly on this phase. In Motion appears in both of its parts, separated by Fear the Sea, Leaves and Stonegarden. The latter reaches back to Always..., the debut album. René Rutten and Jelmer Wiersma share the guitars, while Frank Boeijen handles keyboards, with Hugo Prinsen Geerligs and Hans Rutten in the rhythm section.
Adrenaline and Strange Machines lead the final stretch before Third Chance closes the performance. In 1997, Nighttime Birds continues the direction of Mandylion; the sharper change would come with How to Measure a Planet? in 1998. Preserved in the festival's audiovisual archive, the show captures an earlier stage: the new voice establishing itself while still tied to metal.
