Context
On August 26, 1990, Savatage arrives at Jezebel's, in Anaheim, between the heaviness of the early albums and the theatrical expansion of Gutter Ballet. The tour brings that change to the clubs. Criss Oliva and Chris Caffery split the guitars, with Jon Oliva fronting the quintet.
Ray Gillen comes in on Strange Wings and shares vocals with Jon, picking up a partnership that already existed in the studio. On Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll, Gillen takes the vocals and Jon sits behind the drums. Later, Power of the Night hands the mic to Caffery and puts Jon on guitar.
After this run, Caffery leaves the band, and Streets: A Rock Opera deepens the narrative direction in 1991. The Anaheim night remains in circulation as a bootleg, edited from two cameras. The record keeps a lineup still mixing its new ambitions with Sirens and The Dungeons Are Calling.
- Jon Oliva takes the drums on Rock and Roll and hands the vocals to Chris Caffery on Power of the Night.
