Context
On August 6, 1993, Savatage arrives at the Gateway Theatre, in Chicago, with a new voice up front and Criss Oliva still on guitar. Jon Oliva had stepped down as singer the year before. Zachary Stevens takes the mic on the tour introducing Edge of Thorns.
The band opens with She's in Love and soon focuses the stage on the new album: He Carves His Stone, Skraggy's Tomb and Conversation Piece come in sequence. Johnny Lee Middleton holds down the bass, Andy James plays drums and Wes Garren splits guitar and keyboards. The set also reaches back to Holocaust and The Dungeons Are Calling.
Degrees of Sanity, Follow Me and Lights Out close the show with three tracks from Edge of Thorns. A few months later, Criss's death cuts this lineup short. Savatage carries on and releases Handful of Rain in 1994, with Alex Skolnick. The Chicago recording circulates as a bootleg and preserves this brief meeting between Stevens and Criss.
