Context
In Chicago, Buddy Guy welcomes a television band into his own club. The meeting with G.E. Smith and the Saturday Night Live musicians comes after two appearances on the show. The idea turns that affinity into a stage recording, with room for the blues that carries his career.
At Legends, Guy takes vocals and guitar, while Smith leads the ensemble. Five horns and organ expand the lineup; Johnnie Johnson adds acoustic piano. My Time After Awhile revisits his Chess years, and Damn Right I've Got the Blues brings that past close to his commercial comeback of the 1990s.
The project gets a home video release in 1996 and later reaches DVD. The album of the same name gathers four performances, split between Chicago and New York, while the film stays at Legends. The scale is that of a club, but the lineup puts a small orchestra at the service of Guy's guitar.
- Johnnie Johnson shares the stage with a lineup that includes five horns and organ.
