Context
On July 31, 2020, the space in front of Blind Guardian holds no crowd: the audience is artificial. In Hamburg, Wacken World Wide puts the band on a mixed-reality stage, with a free broadcast. The distance imposed by the pandemic changes a performance usually driven by the fans' participation.
Hansi Kürsch leads the way with Into the Storm, while André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen handle the guitars. Welcome to Dying and Valhalla remain, but The Bard’s Song is left out. Among songs from the 1980s and 1990s, Violent Shadows appears live for the first time. Mirror Mirror closes the ten-song sequence.
The broadcast also works as a window onto the work that comes next. In October, the performance of Violent Shadows is released as a digital single by Nuclear Blast. The studio version arrives in 2022, tied to The God Machine. The recording preserves this interval: the band's past fills a virtual setting, while a new song points ahead.
- Mirror Mirror closes a sequence focused on the band's first six albums.
