Context
One month separates the arrival of The Quantum Enigma from this stop in Landgraaf. On June 7, 2014, Epica returns to Pinkpop for the third time, after playing the 2005 and 2010 editions. Having celebrated ten years with Retrospect, the band presents its sixth album on familiar ground.
Simone Simons takes the vocals, while Mark Jansen splits guitar and growls. Isaac Delahaye, Coen Janssen, Rob van der Loo and Ariën van Weesenbeek complete the six-piece. The Essence of Silence opens the recording; Unchain Utopia and Victims of Contingency hold up the new record's presence between Cry for the Moon and the closing Consign to Oblivion.
After the festivals, promotion continues through Latin America and Europe, extending the album cycle. The Pinkpop recording preserves that early stretch of the road in eight songs, without The Second Stone, also played that day. The selection keeps the freshly released compositions side by side with the pieces that span the band's first decade.
- Four songs from the newly released album share the space with Cry for the Moon and Consign to Oblivion.
