Context
Unable to take the new album on the road, Epica turns a Belgian studio into a stage for a production made for the cameras. The pandemic had cut short the touring plans for Omega. In Lint, the six-piece answers with a recorded show, arranged in five acts and streamed in June 2021.
Simone Simons shares the space with guitars, moving platforms, dancers and fire. The Skeleton Key gets a children's choir; Victims of Contingency puts the musicians under rain. Parts one and three of Kingdom of Heaven come back to back, before Rivers drops the instruments into silence and hands the center to the voices.
Jens De Vos's direction and Coen Janssen's concept explore set changes beyond the usual format of a tour show. In December, the performance comes out on Blu-ray, DVD and audio through Nuclear Blast. The recording preserves the band's answer to isolation: a staged release on a scale of its own.
- Rivers comes a cappella, with Simone Simons joined by a choir.
- Parts one and three of Kingdom of Heaven together fill the third act.
