Context
On May 31, 2004, Pharrell Williams reaches the Pinkpop stage fifteen minutes late and with a new record to defend. Fly or Die had come out in March. In Landgraaf, the move from studio to festival has a particular setup: Chad Hugo sits it out, and Spymob backs Pharrell and Shay Haley.
The rain gets heavier as the group mixes funk, hip-hop and rock. She Wants to Move, Maybe and Breakout meet Run to the Sun and Rock Star. Pharrell holds attention with charisma, but his voice does not always keep up with his ambition. Near the end, the hits produced by the Neptunes come one after another, and Black Eyed Peas take the stage for Lapdance.
After the festival, the performance airs on Dutch television. NPS broadcasts a program devoted to the group on August 19, 2004, preserved in the Beeld & Geluid archive. The footage captures a phase of expansion and friction: producers used to building hits now have to carry them in front of an open field.
- Black Eyed Peas take the stage for the closing Lapdance.
