Context
On May 16, 2005, Kaiser Chiefs take the John Peel Stage at Pinkpop just two months after the release of Employment. The festival reaches its final day in Landgraaf, and the Leeds band shares that stage with Bloc Party, Thirteen Senses, Triggerfinger and Gabriel Rios.
Ricky Wilson sings in front of Andrew White, Simon Rix, Nick Baines and Nick Hodgson. Na Na Na Na Naa opens the set; I Predict a Riot and Modern Way run through the repertoire. During Oh My God, Wilson throws the microphone to the crowd and then jumps down among the fans.
The performance is preserved in the festival's TV coverage, with excerpts catalogued in the Dutch audiovisual archive. In the following months, Employment is nominated for the Mercury Prize; in 2006, the band wins three Brit Awards. The recording holds a scale that predates those trophies: five members, a debut album and a festival stage.
- During Oh My God, the microphone reaches the crowd before Ricky Wilson himself does.
