Muse turned millenarian anxiety, arena melodrama and technological obsession into a language of colossal scale. From Teignmouth to global stadiums, Matthew Bellamy’s trio converted falsettos, riffs and pianos into sonic conspiracies. It began nervous and romantic on Showbiz, gained symphonic muscle on Absolution and then started staging political collapse as pop opera. Even when excessive, Muse makes excess a form of electricity.
Because few groups make the panic of the century sound so big, so physical and so irresistibly singable.
