Context
On May 31, 2004, Franz Ferdinand takes the Pinkpop north stage with just one album out. Take Me Out had already reached number three on the British charts. In Landgraaf, the quartet meets a crowd that raises its hands from the first songs.
Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy share guitars and vocals, with Bob Hardy on bass and Paul Thomson on drums. Cheating on You opens the run, which spreads Matinée, Jacqueline and Michael among the other numbers. McCarthy jumps off the stage. The disco pulse wins over the crowd, although Kapranos's voice does not always come through clearly.
The Mercury Prize is still a few months away: the debut album wins it in September of that year. The performance remains in the festival's audiovisual archive, with all eleven tracks from the debut in the set. The recording holds that precise interval between the early success of Take Me Out and the album's recognition.
- All eleven songs from the first album make the show, with Darts of Pleasure at the close.
