Context
On May 6, 2005, the Plaza Anti-Imperialista in Havana hosts a free show by an American band in the middle of the embargo between the two countries. Audioslave arrive with permission to play and a second album still to come. The trip combines the performance with contact with Cuban musicians.
On stage, Chris Cornell shares space with Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. Set It Off opens the sequence, while Your Time Has Come and Be Yourself preview Out of Exile. The band also takes in their earlier histories: Bulls on Parade comes in as an instrumental, and Cornell takes Black Hole Sun alone on acoustic guitar.
A few weeks later, Out of Exile reaches stores. In October, the Havana stop gets a DVD release, with a selection from the concert and a documentary about the trip. The film preserves two meetings: the quartet with a Cuban audience, and their new songs with the past each member carries.
- Chris Cornell performs Black Hole Sun alone on acoustic guitar.
