Context
In October 2003, Las Vegas hosts Gloria Estefan for seven nights at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The residency presents Unwrapped, her new English-language album, without leaving the hits behind. The contrast shapes the show: newly arrived songs share the stage with the history built alongside the Miami Sound Machine.
Gloria sings in English and Spanish, surrounded by musicians and dancers, with choreography and stage direction by Kenny Ortega. Your Picture and Wrapped find room between Get on Your Feet and Conga. One medley brings Mi Tierra together with Oye Mi Canto; another gathers five ballads, from Words Get in the Way to Reach.
The recording is directed for the screen by Lawrence Jordan and reaches DVD in February 2004. On the same day, a theatrical screening fills theaters in 23 American cities. The residency no longer belongs only to Caesars Palace: the meeting between the new album and the earlier repertoire takes a lasting form outside the theater.
