Context
On June 30, 1990, the weather shifts over Knebworth: sun, wind and rain cross the day. Pink Floyd close the charity gathering of Silver Clef winners, after names like Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. For safety, the band's circular screen is taken down before the performance.
David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright come on with backing musicians and guests. Candy Dulfer plays saxophone on Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Money. Clare Torry takes The Great Gig in the Sky, revisiting her part on the original album. Michael Kamen adds keyboards to Comfortably Numb; Run Like Hell closes the seven songs.
The recording's fate is split across releases. Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell appear on the compilation Knebworth — The Album. In 2019, the complete performance gets DVD and Blu-ray in The Later Years box set, with audio remixed by Gilmour and Andy Jackson. In 2021, it arrives as a standalone album: the charity night finally gets a record of its own.
- Candy Dulfer joins Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Money.
- Michael Kamen backs the band on keyboards for Comfortably Numb.
