Willie Nelson & Asleep at the Wheel — Austin City Limits

“For the meeting of two names tied to the birth of Austin City Limits and its Texas history.”
Context
Before becoming a showcase for many genres, Austin City Limits is born tied to Texas music. Willie Nelson records the pilot in 1974. Asleep at the Wheel appears on the first regular episode. The meeting of the two joins paths that run through the show's own history.
On stage, Nelson shares the space with the band led by Ray Benson. The partnership brings the singer together with a group devoted to western swing, a tradition that crosses country with dance music. Austin is the common ground between the artists and the TV production.
The story of this bond continues in the show's archive. In 2020, the special devoted to Asleep at the Wheel's fifty years revisits performances from several decades, including meetings with Nelson. Television preserves this companionship as part of a musical history built on returns to the same stage.
