“To see Alan Jackson's first appearance on Austin City Limits, at the start of his national rise.”
Context
Before the big headlining tours, there is a television studio in Austin. Alan Jackson comes to Austin City Limits during the phase when he is establishing himself nationally. Signed by Arista Nashville in 1989, he had begun turning years of work in Nashville into a career of much wider reach.
On stage, Jackson sings backed by the Strayhorns, the band that carries his live career. The performance fills one segment of episode 1604, which also features Mark Collie. The space is KLRU's Studio 6A, at the University of Texas: music television made inside a studio, not at a festival.
The session takes its place in the 1991 season. That same year, Jackson also joins the Grand Ole Opry and releases his second album, Don't Rock the Jukebox. The show welcomes him back in the 1995 season. This first appearance remains a televised portrait of the singer before he settled in as the headliner of his own tours.
