“To see the Philadelphia soul reunion in the year Gamble and Huff entered the Hall of Fame.”
Context
On June 7, 2008, the Borgata in Atlantic City hosts a reunion of voices tied to Philadelphia soul. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff had been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that year. The evening turns that honor into a shared stage, with former labelmates in front of a packed house.
Bill Jolly leads the orchestra that carries the rotation of groups and soloists. Harold Melvin's Blue Notes sing The Love I Lost and Wake Up Everybody; Bunny Sigler takes Me & Mrs. Jones. The O'Jays arrive with I Love Music, Use Ta Be My Girl and the pairing of People Get Ready with Love Train.
The night is made for television and gets a DVD release in January 2009. The release combines the show with extra performances and a documentary on the Gamble and Huff partnership. Between songs and studio memories, the film keeps the performers at the center of this collective story.
- Bunny Sigler, Jean Carne and The Three Degrees share Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now.
