Context
In July 2005, Alicia Keys arrives at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with only two studio albums and a string of hits. The July 14 session marks a new chapter of MTV Unplugged. At home in New York, she brings together her own songs, soul references and guests from other fronts.
The piano is not alone. Keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, backing vocals, horns and strings expand the lineup. Karma and Heartburn open the way for If I Ain't Got You and Diary. Adam Levine shares Wild Horses; at the close, Common, Mos Def and Damian Marley join rap and reggae in a single medley.
The performance gets a CD and DVD release in October of that year, turning the television session into Keys' first live album. Unplugged debuts at the top of the Billboard 200, the first project in the series by a female artist to enter there. The recording fixes the move from her first hits to a shared stage.
- Adam Levine joins Wild Horses, before the close with Common, Mos Def and Damian Marley.
