Context
On July 25, 1999, Woodstock's west stage comes to an end with Megadeth. The former Griffiss Air Force Base, in Rome, hosts a band between two phases: Cryptic Writings still fills much of the set, while Risk is already recorded and awaiting release.
Mustaine opens with Holy Wars... The Punishment Due, joined by Marty Friedman, David Ellefson and Jimmy DeGrasso. The run goes through In My Darkest Hour and Reckoning Day before concentrating five songs from Cryptic Writings. Friedman gets a solo spot of his own; Crush 'Em presents the next album. In the encore, Peace Sells honors Gar Samuelson, who had died eleven days earlier.
The show is part of the television coverage of a festival broadcast on pay-per-view. A little over a month later, Risk reaches stores and formalizes the change of musical direction. Friedman announces his departure in December and plays his farewell in January 2000. The recording preserves this quartet before the split.
- Peace Sells closes the show in tribute to former drummer Gar Samuelson.
