Context
On June 6, 2006, Metallica arrives at the Waldbühne with two eras colliding. Master of Puppets was turning twenty, while St. Anger was still the latest studio release. Escape from the Studio '06 makes room to revisit the past and test a composition still without a final title.
Motorbreath opens the show for the first time in the band's history. James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich perform The New Song before playing Master of Puppets in its entirety, from Battery to Damage, Inc. During the second encore, members of Avenged Sevenfold join in on vocals for Commando by Ramones.
The New Song gets three more performances that month, but does not appear under that title on Death Magnetic, released in 2008. The Berlin recording also joins the official catalog of live audio recordings. In 2020, the Metallica Mondays series brings back the full film: a night between celebrating one album and searching for the next.
- Motorbreath opens the show for the first time; members of Avenged Sevenfold join in on Commando.
