Metallica was born in Los Angeles in 1981 and helped invent thrash metal: speed, precision and anger channeled into riffs that sound like heavy machinery. From Kill 'Em All to Master of Puppets, the band took underground metal to stadium size; with the Black Album, in 1991, it reached the mass audience without losing its weight. Decades later, it can still turn an entire festival into a single chorus.
To hear the weight of metal become a mass language without giving up precision.
