“To see Metallica's Pinkpop debut, months before the arrival of Death Magnetic.”
Context
On May 30, 2008, Metallica sets foot on Pinkpop for the first time. Death Magnetic is still months from stores, and the quartet takes Megaland, in Landgraaf, without previewing its songs. The night leans on the earlier catalog, but leaves room for rare returns.
James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich open with Creeping Death and move through Ride the Lightning before bringing back Bleeding Me, absent since November 2004. ...And Justice for All and Devil's Dance widen the journey. In the encore, Last Caress and So What come before Seek & Destroy, which ends with an excerpt of Let There Be Rock.
In the following months, Death Magnetic opens another chapter for the band. The audio from this night is part of the official catalog of live recordings, while the full professional footage is released through the festival archive in 2025. The film keeps a Pinkpop debut that does not need new material to mark its date.
- Bleeding Me returns to the stage for the first time since November 2004.
