“To see Metallica close Pinkpop after a storm, on the tour that hands choices to the fans.”
Context
A storm halts the program in Landgraaf before Metallica goes on, on June 9, 2014. The wait stretches across Pinkpop's closing night. When the quartet takes the Megaland stage, it brings the idea behind the By Request tour: fans help choose the songs.
Battery opens the run, followed by Master of Puppets and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo share the stage across eighteen songs and room for solos. Lords of Summer puts new material among the familiar titles; Fuel comes in the encore as the winner of the day's vote.
After Landgraaf, the schedule takes the band to Glastonbury later that month. The Pinkpop stop remains documented in festival footage, with the full set and the instrumental passages. The finale stretches Seek & Destroy into an excerpt of The Frayed Ends of Sanity, preserving that margin of the show as well.
- Fuel wins the day's vote and opens the encore.
