Context
In November 1979, the California visit puts Bob Marley in front of another leg of the Survival Tour. After trips to Japan, Australia and New Zealand that year, the focus is now Survival. The record trades the atmosphere of Kaya for an explicit defense of African solidarity.
At the Oakland Civic Auditorium, Marley opens with Positive Vibration and soon introduces Wake Up and Live. Aston and Carlton Barrett anchor the lineup, which brings together guitars, keyboards, percussion, saxophone and trumpet. Running Away meets Crazy Bald Head; War flows into No More Trouble. Africa Unite and One Drop keep the new record at the center of the night.
After Exodus, the encore adds Ron Wood on guitar and runs through six songs up to Get Up, Stand Up. The tour moves on to other cities and reaches January 1980. The Oakland recording remains in the Wolfgang’s archive, while the road ahead takes Marley to the celebration of Zimbabwe's independence. The African agenda gets a concrete stage.
- The encore gathers six songs, from Is This Love? to Get Up, Stand Up.
