Bob Marley turned the language of reggae into music of worldwide reach without separating popular song, Rastafarian spirituality and political conflict. From the Wailers formed in Kingston to the international period on Island, his work moved through ska, rocksteady and roots reggae.
The departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer changed the lineup, but did not lessen Marley’s weight as a songwriter and cultural figure. Even after his death in 1981, the catalog kept defining the global image of reggae.
Songs of faith, desire and resistance that made reggae speak to the world without losing its Jamaican accent.
