“To see the B-52s at a sold-out Paradiso, on the tour that breaks a sixteen-year gap without new material.”
Context
Sixteen years without an album of new material do not mean sixteen years away from the stage. On July 19, 2008, the B-52s arrive at a sold-out Paradiso with Funplex just released and a new reason to tour Europe. The Amsterdam reunion puts recent songs in front of an audience that already knows the party.
Pump opens the show. Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson dance on opposite sides of the stage, while Fred Schneider roams with his spoken-word delivery. Keith Strickland holds down the guitars. Between Ultraviolet, Mesopotamia and Private Idaho, the band brings different eras together; Cindy takes center stage on Give Me Back My Man, one of the high points of the night.
Planet Claire and Rock Lobster fill the first encore; Channel Z closes the second. The recording is part of the archive of Fabchannel broadcasts, a platform that shuts down in March 2009. The footage outlives the platform's disappearance. The recording preserves a phase in which the band is again presenting new material without abandoning its past.
- Cindy Wilson steps to the front on Give Me Back My Man.
- Channel Z closes the show in the second encore.
