Context
In September 2008, the opening of the Rock the Cosmos Tour takes the form of a free concert in Kharkiv. Queen and Paul Rodgers take over Freedom Square in an AIDS awareness event. The meeting comes at the start of a new stage of the partnership, tied to the album The Cosmos Rocks.
Brian May and Roger Taylor share the stage with Rodgers, Spike Edney, Jamie Moses and Danny Miranda. The set brings Queen's catalog close to the songs of Free and Bad Company. Bijou puts May's guitar against Freddie Mercury's recorded voice, in a video appearance, with no physical presence on stage.
The show is filmed by David Mallet and gets a commercial release in 2009. The edit drops A Kind of Magic, Wishing Well and Radio Ga Ga from the original performance. The recording arrives after the partnership with Rodgers has ended, preserving a lineup that tries to reconcile different repertoires within the same show structure.
