“To see the solo debut rebuilt thirty years later, at the Highline Ballroom, in the Kinky Boots season.”
Context
Thirty years after her solo debut, Cyndi Lauper returns to the running order of She’s So Unusual. On December 9, 2013, the Highline Ballroom hosts the Front and Center taping in front of a small audience. The anniversary comes in the same year her music for Kinky Boots wins the Tony for best score.
Money Changes Everything opens the run. Girls Just Want to Have Fun, When You Were Mine and Time After Time follow in album order. The program continues through She Bop and All Through the Night to Witness, I’ll Kiss You, He’s So Unusual and Yeah Yeah. The album shapes the performance.
The taping is part of the anniversary celebration announced by the label for 2014. The set keeps the order of the debut and places its lesser-known tracks back alongside the singles.
