Context
Josh Klinghoffer's birthday gives Rock in Rio 2019 an unusual choice of repertoire. On October 3, Red Hot Chili Peppers plays Sikamikanico live for the first time, as a gift to the guitarist. Parque Olímpico hosts the lineup with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith on a night open to detours.
Can't Stop starts the block of songs. Dark Necessities and Go Robot represent The Getaway, while Hey, Pea and Aeroplane widen the selection. I Wanna Be Your Dog brings in the Stooges; Just What I Needed visits the Cars. The Power of Equality is dedicated to the Amazon before the sequence that moves through Soul to Squeeze and By the Way.
In the encore, Josh sings Tom Waits' I Don't Wanna Grow Up. Goodbye Angels and Give It Away close the performance. The birthday stays at the center of the memory because it produces a concrete debut, beyond the happy birthday. The recording preserves a band that chooses to surprise through song selection, instead of repeating only its best-known titles.
