Context
As Ghost finishes on the main stage, Macabre takes over the Sophie Lancaster tent to close out Saturday at Bloodstock. It is August 12, 2017, at Catton Park. More than three decades after forming, Corporate Death, Nefarious, and Dennis the Menace are still together, with no lineup changes.
The trio alternates detailed accounts of crimes with short bursts of extreme metal. Nursery rhyme melodies collide with precise riffs and distorted voices. Actors portray Albert Fish and Ed Gein, taking the staging into deliberately unsettling territory. Scrub a Dub Dub slows the pace without softening the content.
Grim Scary Tales, from 2011, is still the band's latest studio album. The next one, Carnival of Killers, does not arrive until nearly a decade after it. The festival footage preserves this interval: eighteen songs, the lineup intact, and a theater of crime that makes discomfort a central part of the show.
- Actors bring Albert Fish and Ed Gein to the stage, expanding the songs' unsettling theater.
