Context
It is still morning at Catton Park when Chelsea Grin takes Bloodstock's main stage on August 11, 2017. Between Forever Still and Whitechapel, the Utah group brings deathcore to the festival's Friday lineup. Self Inflicted, released the previous year, provides most of the set.
Alex Koehler leads nine songs, from Skin Deep to Broken Bonds. Clickbait and Strung Out keep the recent album prominent, but My Damnation and Recreant bring the weight of the earlier catalog. In Recreant, the members headbang in sync over a sub-bass drop: the pause becomes an impact of its own.
The recording preserves a phase close to changing faces. In 2018, Koehler leaves the band and Tom Barber takes over on vocals; Jake Harmond also leaves before Eternal Nightmare. The performance remains available in full through the festival itself, preserving the meeting of the Self Inflicted material and the voice that recorded it.
- Recreant features a sub-bass break with the members headbanging in sync.
