Context
On August 13, 2016, Gojira takes the second-to-last slot on Bloodstock’s main stage, before Mastodon. Magma had arrived two months earlier, with more room for melodies and clean vocals. At Catton Park, the quartet brings that shift before an audience accustomed to the heaviness of the earlier albums.
Toxic Garbage Island opens the set. Joe Duplantier shares guitar duties with Christian Andreu, while Mario Duplantier and Jean-Michel Labadie anchor the rhythmic shifts. Stranded gets the crowd moving; Flying Whales draws a strong response. The production includes pyrotechnics, but the band’s collective precision remains at the center of the performance, between recent material and songs from the early albums.
Vacuity closes the band’s allotted hour. Touring continues behind Magma, and the next cycle brings Grammy nominations for the album and Silvera. In March 2017, the full performance premieres on Metal Hammer. The recording preserves a moment of transition: new songs already share the same ground with the established repertoire.
- Backbone flows into the closing section of Remembrance.
