Context
On August 11, 2017, Amon Amarth tops the Friday bill at Bloodstock. The band's previous appearance at the festival was in 2014. Now, at Catton Park, the Jomsviking tour finds a stage that matches its growing scale, with Jocke Wallgren on drums since 2016.
Johan Hegg leads the performance through scenery changes, fire, and battles between Viking warriors. Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg's guitars carry the melodies of Cry of the Black Birds, while War of the Gods gets the crowd moving. In the encore, a giant serpent takes over the stage during Twilight of the Thunder God.
The night falls in the final stretch of the Jomsviking campaign. At that same festival, Söderberg announces that writing for the next album will begin after the summer dates. Berserker arrives in 2019, and the full Bloodstock recording begins circulating in 2022, preserving the theatrical scale of this phase of the band.
- Twilight of the Thunder God closes the encore with a giant serpent onstage.
