Context
In August 2017, Obituary arrives at the final day of Bloodstock with a new record and nearly three decades separating it from Slowly We Rot. The self-titled album came out in March. At Catton Park, the band takes the Ronnie James Dio Stage without abandoning its Florida death metal roots.
John Tardy leads the quintet between the guitars of Trevor Peres and Kenny Andrews, with Terry Butler and Donald Tardy holding down the rhythm section. Chopped in Half and Dying deliver heavy, repetitive riffs. Sentence Day, A Lesson in Vengeance and Ten Thousand Ways to Die bring the recent material into direct contact with the early records.
After Bloodstock, the route continues to Tilburg and Dortmund: the festival is a stop on Summer Tour 2017, not its conclusion. The performance remains available as an audiovisual record of the event, with Slowly We Rot closing the set. The meeting of songs from 1989 and 2017 preserves a period when new material and enduring staples share the same stage.
