Butthole Surfers made rock an experience of malfunction: noise, psychedelia, punk, nightmare humor and an almost religious refusal of normality. In the 1980s, Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary turned shows and records into deliberate accidents; in the 1990s, they reached radio with Pepper without becoming domesticated.
