Context
In March 2005, Ben Folds' piano finds a different scale in the gardens of Kings Park in Perth. There are two performances with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the songwriter's first orchestral experience. Songs that had passed through Ben Folds Five and his solo career get scores prepared for this meeting.
Folds sings and plays piano in front of an 83-piece orchestra, with Simon Kenway conducting. Zak and Sara opens the musical sequence; Smoke, Boxing and Brick bring the trio's past to the same stage as Annie Waits and Fred Jones Part 2. The Luckiest closes the 14 tracks selected for the film.
The collaboration continues later that year, with performances alongside the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In December, Epic releases Live in Perth on DVD, preserving the two Australian nights in a single edit. The experience stops being an isolated event and opens the way to new symphonic concerts, including a series across Australian cities in 2006.
