Why watch

“To see Venom Prison take the main stage at Bloodstock with only their debut album released.”

Context

It is Sunday morning in Catton Park, and the fatigue of two days at the festival still weighs on the crowd. On August 13, 2017, Venom Prison takes the Ronnie James Dio Stage with just one album released. Animus had arrived the previous October; in June, the band had won a Metal Hammer award.

Larissa Stupar hurls guttural vocals against the guitars of Ash Gray and Ben Thomas, who work together in a wall of riffs. Death metal meets the pressure of hardcore before a crowd still waking up. Abysmal Agony, Corrode the Black Sun and Womb Forced Animus anchor the set, which closes with The Primal Chaos.

The full footage preserves the band's appearance on the main stage, still in its debut-album phase. In February 2018, Animus gets an expanded edition with five live recordings from the previous summer's tour. The Bloodstock recording captures another slice of that progress: a young band bringing its confrontational music to a bigger stage.
