Prince treated the studio as laboratory, stage and an extension of his own body. From Minneapolis, he built a body of work in which funk, rock, soul, pop and electronics never respected stable borders.

A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, compulsive songwriter and performer of rare magnetism, he also waged a public fight for artistic autonomy and control of his catalog. His speed of output makes his discography uneven by definition, but it also reveals a creative freedom almost without parallel in pop.
