“To see Papa Emeritus II on the Palco Mundo in 2013, when Ghost had only two albums.”
Context
On September 19, 2013, the Palco Mundo welcomes a figure in papal vestments and a skull face among the acts on the day devoted to metal. Ghost arrive with only two albums and take the slot between Sepultura and Alice in Chains. Infestissumam, released in April, is the center of the performance.
Papa Emeritus II moves his arms as if conducting a choir, while the five instrumentalists stay masked. The crowd's response is restrained, but Year Zero manages to raise the applause. Further on, the piano opens Ghuleh/Zombie Queen and shifts the focus to atmosphere, before the closing Monstrance Clock.
The Brazilian visit continues the next day, in São Paulo, with Iron Maiden and Slayer. In Rio, what remains is the meeting between a band still growing and a crowd focused on the night's bigger acts. The TV broadcast preserves that tension: the religious theater is already set, but the buy-in does not come automatically.
- Year Zero breaks through the restrained reception and raises the crowd's applause.
