Mastodon

Mastodon emerged in Atlanta, taking sludge metal into progressive architecture without losing its physical impact. Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher and, for decades, Brent Hinds made records that felt at once brutal and meticulously built. Leviathan became a reference point, Crack the Skye widened the psychedelic reach, and the later work moved the band toward more direct structures. Hinds’s departure and death, in 2026, mark an unavoidable rupture.
