“To see System of a Down's debut in Armenia on the eve of the Armenian genocide centennial.”
Context
On the eve of a centennial marked by loss, Republic Square hosts a gathering delayed for decades. On April 23, 2015, System of a Down plays Armenia for the first time. The free concert brings the Wake Up the Souls Tour to the country where all four members' families originated.
Rain falls on thousands of people as Holy Mountains opens the show. Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan move through the band's five albums, taking in Prison Song, P.L.U.C.K. and Toxicity. A three-part mini-documentary breaks up the musical sets and keeps the Armenian genocide at the center of the night.
Tankian speaks of his surviving grandparents and calls for international recognition. The live broadcast takes this gathering beyond the square, streaming through Rolling Stone and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. When Sugar closes the set, the recording preserves more than a debut in a new country: a band turns a return to its roots into a public act of remembrance.
- Three documentary segments connect the performance to the campaign for recognition of the genocide.
