Context
On August 12, 2018, Mr. Big's hard rock meets an audience accustomed to more extreme doses of metal. At Catton Park, the booking feels like a deliberate contrast. There is also an absence: Pat Torpey died in February, and Matt Starr handles the drums for the dates already booked.
Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan open Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy with picks attached to power drills. Eric Martin acknowledges the distance between the band and the rest of the lineup, but leads Rock & Roll Over and Alive & Kickin'. Wild World and To Be With You turn the encounter into a singalong, before Colorado Bulldog closes the set.
The full recording begins circulating in March 2019, released by the festival itself. Its roughly 45 minutes capture a lineup in transition, still close to Defying Gravity, the last album to feature Torpey. Rather than presenting a new identity, the show concentrates the strength of the catalog and keeps the band moving after the loss.
- Gilbert and Sheehan bring power drills to the opener; Colorado Bulldog closes the 45-minute set.
