“To see Green Day close Pinkpop on its return to the stage after Billie Joe Armstrong's treatment.”
Context
In June 2013, returning to big stages has a concrete meaning for Green Day. Billie Joe Armstrong had gone through treatment after the Las Vegas episode, and dates had been canceled. In Landgraaf, the band takes the closing slot of the 44th Pinkpop, already on the road with the 99 Revolutions Tour.
99 Revolutions opens the show and puts the 2012 trilogy at the center of the night, without pushing aside Dookie and American Idiot. The running order also makes room for the unexpected: Good Riddance fills the time Tré Cool needs to fix his bass drum pedal. On Longview, Billie Joe shares the microphone with a fan called onto the stage.
The encore brings together American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia before Brutal Love closes the performance. The tour continues through Europe until August; in 2014, the band headlines Australia's Soundwave. Preserved on video in the festival archive, the show holds two stories together: the return to the stage and the defense of three recent albums.
- Good Riddance comes in while Tré Cool fixes a problem with his bass drum pedal.
- Longview gets the voice of a fan called onto the stage.
