Context
On January 30, 2014, staff and guests fill NPR's offices in Washington, right up to the windowsills. Pixies arrive after getting lost in the garage. The band is going through a lineup change: Paz Lenchantin is the new member, while Greens and Blues has just come out on EP2.
Black Francis wields an acoustic guitar, and Joey Santiago keeps the electric guitar, the group's only amplified instrument. David Lovering works with a snare, a cymbal and a foot-operated tambourine. Paz plays violin. Greens and Blues opens the run; Silver Snail, still unreleased on record, comes before Monkey Gone to Heaven.
The session reaches the public in February through the Tiny Desk series. In the following months, Greens and Blues and Silver Snail become part of Indie Cindy, the band's first studio album since 1991. The recording preserves this interval: the new songs already take up space, but still share an office desk with the past.
- Paz takes the violin, while Lovering pares the drums down to snare, cymbal and tambourine.
