Context
Twenty-eight years separate this afternoon from Madness's previous Pinkpop appearance, in 1981. On May 31, 2009, the group returns to the Megaland main stage for the festival's 40th edition. The Liberty of Norton Folgate had just reached stores, bringing new material to this reunion.
Suggs wears pink and leads a performance split between new songs and old hits. Dust Devil, Clerkenwell Polka and Forever Young find room among songs the crowd already knows. The response is uneven: part of the audience drifts during the new material, while Baggy Trousers and House of Fun set the field in motion.
After Landgraaf, the schedule continues through European festivals and reaches the Glastonbury stage in June. The Pinkpop footage circulates through the broadcast and the festival's audiovisual archive. It captures a meeting less simple than an anniversary celebration: a band with recent songs in front of a crowd that also demands the past.
- Suggs wears pink and alternates the new songs from The Liberty of Norton Folgate with the 1980s hits.
