“To see Bono and The Edge preview Songs of Surrender at NPR, joined by a Washington teenage choir.”
Context
In February 2023, the space is an office desk in Washington, not a stadium. Bono and The Edge arrive at NPR without Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. After five days of rehearsals at Bono's New York apartment, the duo presents the stripped-down concept of Songs of Surrender.
The four choices come from 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind. Beautiful Day opens the session with the teenage choir of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. In a Little While continues the meeting. Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of carries the memory of Michael Hutchence; Walk On gets a dedication to the Ukrainian people.
The session reaches the public on March 17, together with Songs of Surrender. The album gathers forty reimagined U2 songs, produced and curated by The Edge. The Tiny Desk condenses this revision into four songs from a single era: the scale shrinks, but memory stays at the center of the performance.
- Walk On closes the session in a reworked version dedicated to the people of Ukraine.
