Context
On August 18, 1990, Whitesnake returns to the top of the Monsters of Rock bill in Castle Donington. It is the band's second time headlining the festival. The Slip of the Tongue tour brings Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg to the stage, sharing guitar duties alongside David Coverdale.
The title track opens the show, and Slide It In connects this era to the earlier material. Vandenberg gets his spotlight in Adagio for Strato and Flying Dutchman Boogie. Crying in the Rain breaks for solos by Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge; Vai takes over afterward with For the Love of God and The Audience Is Listening.
The tour continues through September, ending in Tokyo before the band goes on hiatus. The Donington recording receives an official CD and DVD release in 2011, more than twenty years after the performance. The 2020 anniversary edition restores the complete show, including both guitarists' solos.
- Crying in the Rain splits into two parts around the bass and drum solos.
- Bad Boys incorporates a passage from Children of the Night.
